gPretoria, 17 March 2013 – Today, thirteen affiliates of the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund are showing their steel by participating in the Warrior Obstacle Race taking place at Smuts House in Irene. ‘Jumping Kids’ – a non-profit initiative that supplies high-tech prosthetics to children with lower extremity amputations – was named as one of the charities to benefit from this year’s Warrior Race series. Warrior plans to divide proceeds from its charity event at the end of the year between its three chosen charities.

The ‘Bratz’ and ‘Rookie’ teams representing Jumping Kids consist of both able- and disabled participants. The contenders are living proof of the Fund’s vision that a life without limitations is indeed possible and that Jumping Kids is about ability instead of disability.

“We are honoured to be chosen as one of the Warrior Company’s 2013 charities and look forward to participating. Today is about having fun, pushing boundaries and proving that, with appropriate assistance and technology, persons with amputations can lead full and active lives”, says Johan Snyders; founder of Jumping Kids and chief executive of Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics.

Jumping Kids was launched in 2009 to address the needs of young South Africans with amputations who do not have access to adequate prosthetics. Its vision is to allow kids to be kids – to play, run, climb and jump just like any other kid. The Fund supplies walking as well as running prosthetics to lower extremity amputees.
Each beneficiary, or Jumping Kid, becomes part of the project for a minimum of three years during which regular follow-up, assessment, and prosthetic tweaking take place to ensure optimal mobility and development.

Out of the five-member strong Bratz team, no less than three are Jumping Kids. Emile Burgers is a single below-knee amputee while Ntando Mahlangu, as well as Brandon Menezes, are bi-lateral lower extremity amputees. Needless to say, none of the boys hesitated to take on the opportunity to conquer South Africa’s most extreme obstacle race.
