About Jumping Kids

Technology has come a long way to enable amputees.

The prosthetic technology to empower children living with lower limb amputation or limb related disability already exists.

This new way of prosthetic manufacture does not compromise on quality. A below knee prosthesis is made in four steps, using eight components, while actual fitment can take as little as 45 minutes.

The revolutionary method combined with a holistic approach to rehabilitation present children living with amputation or limb related disability with the opportunity to develop on par with their able-body peers.

Once part of the programme, beneficiaries remain on it for a minimum period of one year during which routine follow-up consultations are necessary to ensure the mobility equipment is updated as the child grows.

Our social impact philosophy is built on three pillars; facilitating access to mobility (prosthetics/orthotics), quality education and sport.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide access to quality prosthetic equipment and rehabilitative care, mainstream education, and sports participation opportunities for children living with lower limb amputations or deficiencies from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

Our Vision

Our vision is to expand our reach by initiating projects to assist children living with lower limb amputations or deficiencies across South- and Southern Africa through engagement with industry partners, local communities, organizations and government.

Our Journey

Jumping Kids was launched in 2009 by prosthetist, Johan Snyders after he became aware of countless children living with lower limb amputation without access to quality prosthetic equipment or rehabilitative care. He decided to get involved and make a difference.

In 2013 Michael Stevens joined the team. He was selected as a Vodacom Change the World (CtW) volunteer in service of a charity of choice. Being a bilateral lower limb prosthetic device user himself since childhood, Michael chose to volunteer at Jumping Kids to help make sure more children get the opportunities he had while growing up.

Under his direction our Jumping Kids vision evolved into a holistic approach to providing access to prosthetics while creating opportunities for beneficiaries to attend quality mainstream schools and participate in sport.

Get Involved

The Present

Jumping Kids has assisted approximately 250 children; hailing from across South Africa and as far as Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Mozambique; living with lower limb amputation or limb related disability to gain access to quality prosthetic/orthotic equipment and rehabilitative care.

Through the provision of educational bursaries and support during the application process, we have assisted numerous beneficiaries to gain access to mainstream education. Beneficiaries have successfully applied to quality schools such as Pretoria Boys High School, Pretoria Girls High School and King Edward VII School in Johannesburg.

Our endeavours to provide beneficiaries with access to sporting opportunities have produced many success stories. The inclusion of Jumping Kids ambassadors; Ntando Mahlangu, Puseletso Mabote and Tebogo Mofokeng in the South African team competing at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics is a point of pride.

The Future

Our goal is to support beneficiaries with access to mobility equipment, rehabilitation therapy, school and sport through-out their formative years. The continued support from individual donors, sponsors, corporate partners and charity ambassadors makes it possible.

The future dream is to establish a Centre of Excellence focused on sport as a method to promote rehabilitation and integration after amputation while new techniques in prosthetic manufacturing can be explored.

The bigger dream is to make affordable prosthetic solutions and rehabilitative methods available to more amputees on the continent by engaging in knowledge-transfer initiatives with representatives from the SADC region.
